Coquard Loison-Fleurot Bourgogne Rouge 2014

Bright ruby in the glass, there is a fresh, lively red cherry aromatic to the nose with hints of black pepper, cinnamon and clove. The palate is juicy with brambly red fruits and a light earthiness which adds to the complexity. There is a hint of wood spice on the finish to pair with the savoury, peppery character underneath. The tannins are soft and rounded with a violet lift from the fresh acidity. A wonderfully well-balanced Bourgogne Rouge that is perfect for drinking now!

The 2014 Bourgogne Rouge comes from 40-year old vines in three parcels close to Clos de Vougeot. It has a fresh blackcurrant and wild strawberry-scented bouquet with fine delineation. You might think there was a little stem addition here, but there is none. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin and bright red fruit, with pleasing structure on the finish. This is as good a Bourgogne Rouge as you will find in 2014.

For a domaine with no less than six Grand Cru vineyards in their holdings, Domaine Coquard Loison Fleurot flies very firmly under the radar.

Winemaker Thomas Callodot, together with Claire Fleurot are relatively new to the market, historically the wines were sold to negociants. They only started domaine bottling in 2009/2010, but since then, they have rapidly built a very strong reputation as a domaine making classically crafted low intervention Burgundy. The wines brim with red fruit and possess superb structure - they have real vim and vigour.

The core people at the estate are Claire Fleurot, who is the manager and head of sales – and then the talented winemaker Thomas Colladot. They are both a part of the family and are responsible for setting the pace at the new Domaine Coquard-Loison-Fleurot.

The style is distinct with casks from Reymond – just as Domaine Cathiard. While the oak is relatively light – around 30% for the village wines to 50% – 60% for the top Grand Crus.
