The Poitín is not very famous outside the Irish borders. Not everyone knows him in the interior either. He is the precursor of whiskey, so to speak. The Poitín was made by monks several centuries after the birth of Christ. From the 18th century onwards, however, the King of Ireland banned its production and whiskey, as we know it, replaced it.
