All the 2015 wines from Ch. Ausone wowed us and Moulin Saint-Georges is often a leading contender in our category for great-value wine for the table in five years from the vintage, this year was no different. Concentrated fruit is blended superbly with tasty tannins and a deep, blackberry finish. It is a crowd-pleasing wine. Rewarding. It demonstrates all that is good about St Emilion.

Blend: 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. The sample was a little overwhelmed by oak, and seemed a litle muffled - so marginally disappointing for a wine we normally like - but again the mass and flavour concentration are here and I'd be surprised if it did not sort itself out, but maybe this is another Merlot that just is not quite at the top of its game. 

One of a number of impressive “lesser” wines from the Ausone stable in 2015, this is fine, floral and well balanced, with stylishly integrated oak, granular tannins and bright, supporting acidity. Very dark and glossy. Intense sweet oak in evidence on the nose. Very polished and well made because on the palate the fruit trumps the oak. Glossy, ambitious stuff that seems to be much more ambitious than it used to be.

Perfumed, red berry nose. Round and supple on the palate but with an affirmed tannic structure behind. Fresh and long on the finish. Classic in style with good tension.

The 2015 Moulin Saint-Georges is powerful and ripe, with plenty of forward fruit. One of the more exuberant wines in the Vauthier lineup, the Moulin Saint-Georges offers striking depth and tons of richness, especially at its level. Plum, black cherry, scorched earth, tobacco and leather develop in the glass. The Moulin is a bit rustic and burly, but that is in relative terms, as it has so much to offer. This is a traditional blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc in the 2015 vintage, with an approximate alcohol of 14%, a figure given for the entire Vauthier portfolio. This has a dark and profoundly perfumed nose, black cherry fruit lifted with a peony freshness, also a rather honeyed application of oak. There follows a beautifully pure and fragrant palate, black cherry again, but here with the precision of taut cherry skin rather than the plumper flesh. It has energy, and a fresh perfume, the entire middle lifted, very pure, precise and impressive. The finish is long, tannic, very ripe but also framed and vigorous with an exciting energy. There seems to be a strong showing across the board chez Vauthier in this vintage. Chris Kissack

The 2015 Moulin St Georges is a blend of 80% Merlot picked 2, 5 and 10 October and 20% Cabernet Franc picked on 5 October, matured in 85% new oak. At the moment, the bouquet is showing the new oak component, with broody black fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied and seems to have absorbed the wood quicker than the nose, smooth and sensual with touches of dark chocolate lining the long finish.
