Minty and other herbal as well as stony and later fruity notes open the 2016 Clos de la Bergerie. It develops a remarkable purity and finesse on the nose that is less fruit intense than the gorgeous 2018, but it is a great ambassador of a dramatic vintage that had great losses, mainly due to frost. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, intense and even rich but with a firm tannin structure and lots of power. Everything here is discreet except the sheer power, yet there is nothing broad or overdone. The fruit is very clear and even fresh and the mineral structure is crystalline and refined as well as vital. This is a very expressive yet not the most delicate Clos de la Bergerie that shouldn’t be missed in any collection of this cru appellation, in which the Joly family holds 3.5 hectares.
