The history of the SeRum reaches far back into the 19th century. At that time the Panama Canal was built. Due to the hard working conditions and the outbreak of the disease malaria many Cubans and people living in the Caribbean died. Cuban women added pickled dried fruits and spices to their old Panamanian spirits to make a kind of energy drink that would give men strength. Later, these spirits were also used to treat snake bites and malaria, as they were believed to have a healing effect, hence the name 'SeRum'. SeRum Ancon was named after the American freight and passenger ship that was officially the first ship to cross the Panama Canal in 1914.
