The history of the SeRum goes far back into the 19th century. At that time, the Panama Canal was built. Due to the harsh working conditions and the outbreak of the disease malaria, many Cubans and people living in the Caribbean died. Cuban women added pickled dried fruits and spices to their old Panamanian spirits to make a kind of energy drink to give men strength. Later, these spirits were also administered for snakebites and malaria because they were believed to have healing properties; hence the name 'SeRum'. SeRum Puente Centenario was named after the gigantic bridge over the Panama Canal that reconnects South and Central America.
