In the 10th century, during the reign of King Gagik I of the Bagratuni Dynasty, a luxurious residence was built on Akhtamar Island. The name of the island is derived from the legend of Princess Tamar and her love for a handsome young man who drowned in Lake Van with the words "Ah, Tamar". Mount Ararat, which can be seen on the label, is the most cherished symbol of Armenian culture. On the mountain slopes are the oldest vineyards in the world.
